The Minnesota Solar Project will replace the soon-to-be-retired coal-fired power plant, reaching 710 megawatts

Xcel Energy has completed the third phase of the Sherco Solar Project in Becker, Minnesota, which aims to replace a coal-fired power plant nearing retirement. With the first three phases operational, the Sherco Solar Project has now generated 710 megawatts of electricity.

The proposed fourth phase will increase Sheko Solar's total power generation capacity to 910 megawatts, capable of supplying electricity to over 190,000 households by 2029. This expansion is expected to create approximately 300 joint construction jobs and generate $90 million in local economic growth.

Completing the Sherco Solar Phase III project is an important step in our efforts to provide customers with reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean energy, "said Bria Shea, President of Xcel Energy Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This project demonstrates how we can meet the growing energy demand, create economic opportunities for Minnesota communities, and continue to advance our renewable energy transition by leveraging existing infrastructure and workforce experts.

As a senior operations manager at Xcel Energy's solar and energy storage site who grew up in this community and worked at the location, it's exciting to see Sherco's next chapter taking shape, "said Luke Molus. For decades, Sherco factories have been helping to power our region, and today, Sherco Solar is continuing this tradition by providing reliable energy to customers and creating a new future for this location and the people working here
